AAT-52 is quite possibly the most unfortunate MG of all. She is tied with M249 SAW for the lowest Damage stat of all MGs, meaning that the damage she deals in her first volley damage is pitiful -- for this reason, she can’t really be used for teams that aim to end the battle in said first volley. AAT-52 also has an incredibly mediocre Night Skill, giving her an 85% Damage increase at Night and a 30% increase at daytime. This Damage increase isn’t as particularly potent when compared to the 60% increase of other 2 stars offer, or the 70% increase of M1918, who also has a decent Damage stat. Much like her insignificant Damage stat increase, AAT-52’s 20% RoF tile buff for SGs is also completely unextraordinary, barely increasing the reload speed of most SGs.
Overall, AAT-52 is really not an MG worth using even despite her (very few) good qualities. She isn’t particularly effective in her niche, her tile buff isn’t useful, and she’s outclassed by a unit that shares her rarity. Even if she is the only option of MG available, she’s not worth having time and effort invested in her. One would be better off grinding Resources to craft better MGs instead.
Passable Night DPS
AAT-52 has the second highest Night DPS of all 2 star MGs, only beat out by LWMMG. Be aware however this is assuming the battle lasts longer than 20 seconds, which should never happen with an MG team.
As a two star unit, AAT-52 costs less cores to Dummy Link and is easier to obtain duplicates of.
Awful Damage Stat
AAT-52 is tied with M249 SAW for lowest Damage stat of all MGs. This causes her first volley damage to deal some of the lowest, if not the lowest first volley damage of all MGs.
Long Initial Cooldown
AAT-52’s Skill has an Initial Cooldown of 8 seconds, meaning her Skill won’t actually see any use until about 10 seconds into battle after she has reloaded. At that point, most battles should be over or close to it.
Awful Day Performance
AAT-52 has the absolute lowest DPS of any MG during the Day, meaning her effectiveness is entirely limited to Night battles.
Awful Tile Buff
AAT-52’s 20% RoF buff for SGs is not only poorly positioned, it also does not affect SGs in a significant way, marginally increasing their reload speed and nothing else.
AAT-52 is outclassed in DPS at both Day and Night by LWWMG, and LWMMG does not have a Night specific skill, meaning it is much more efficient to use LWMMG than AAT-52.
AAT-52 is an entirely uncompelling MG, and the first reason for this is her statline. Her 79 Damage and 24 Accuracy do nothing to bolster her effectiveness, and her standard magazine of 10 is her only redeeming stat. Due to her low Accuracy, AAT-52 actually tends to do less damage in her first volley than M249 SAW, who has 2 less rounds in her magazine than AAT-52 does. Considering SAW is generally not seen as a good MG to use, this does not bode well for AAT-52’s effectiveness.
AAT-52’s Skill may initially just barely seem to make up for her stats, but it too holds her back as well. Providing an 85% Damage increase in Night missions and a 30% increase in Damage at daytime with an 8 second Initial Cooldown, this skill just barely allows AAT-52 to outperform every 2 Star MG besides LWMMG at Night, assuming the battle goes longer than 20 seconds. Unfortunately, since most SGMG Echelons seek to end the battle within the MGs’ first volley, this invalidates AAT-52’s Skill almost entirely. Even if this Skill were to come into effect and she was able to fire her whole volley, AAT-52 would lose in total damage dealt to practically every single 3 Star, 4 Star, and 5 Star MG, as well as LWMMG who shares her rarity.
AAT-52’s tile buff is also fairly terrible, granting a 20% increase to RoF to a single SG. This isn’t particularly useful due to SGs having an already very low RoF, making a 20% increase to their fire speed not actually noticeable. Furthermore, because of the calculation behind Rate of Fire increases to Reload Speed, this tile buff often just changes an SG’s 11 second reload to a 10 second reload. Even if one wants to argue this is actually significant, it is important to remember that SG’s primary role is to tank, meaning that their damage output is almost completely insignificant.
Overall, AAT-52 just has too much going against her and not enough going for her to be good. Her terrible damage output, Skill that won’t see use 90% of the time, and tile buff that is essentially meaningless means that her negative qualities vastly outweigh and outnumber her strengths. If one is desperate for a 2 Star MG to use, they should use LWMMG instead and avoid AAT-52 on sight.
SGs with Damage/Accuracy Boosting tile buffs
Due to AAT-52’s low Damage and Accuracy, she appreciates SGs that boost these stats. M37 Ithaca, RMB-93, and KSG will help her out.
HGs with Damage/Accuracy Boosting tile buffs/Skills
Again, due to AAT-52’s low Damage and Accuracy, she appreciates HGs that can rectify this weakness. Mk23, SAA, and M1895 fill this role well.
MGs with Good Damage Output
AAT-52’s low damage output means that if she’s being used, she needs other units that can make up for her deficiencies. M2HB, LWMMG, and PK are able to do this, and the former two do not require many cores if duplicates are unavailable.
The standard 1SG 3MG 1HG or 1SG 2MG 2HG formation works best for AAT-52, with the former variation usually having more damage output than the latter. Of note is the fact that this formation will always lead to AAT-52 not buffing the SG, but this is fine due to the trivial nature of her tile buff.
The slightly less standard 2 SG 3MG or 2SG 2MG 1HG formation also works for AAT-52, albeit it is slightly less effective than the first pictured Echelon composition. If running this formation, AAT-52 does not have to be used in a position that will buff the SGs, as it will barely make a difference regardless of whether it is active or not..
The French machine gun AAT-52 was one of the first post-World War 2 French weapons produced. It was the most widely used machine gun in the French Army, but after 2008 it was replaced by the FN MAG. Notably, this model of machine gun is still in service, albeit as of now it is only used as a vehicle mounted weapon.
